The Lauri Mitchell Employment Center (LMEC) is a consumer-run and operated employment, empowerment, and training center who has been offering computer training at CWC for over two years.
Since 1995, LMEC had been successfully assisting mental health consumers in the metropolitan Washington, DC area to obtain and maintain meaningful, gainful employment through computer training, employment assistance, peer counseling and support. For some people this assistance continues throughout their entire careers. All services are free and confidential.
Although LMEC serves people with a variety of disabilities and some without, it is unique because it specializes in serving those with mental illness. LMEC was created and is primarily staffed by mental health consumers who are uniquely qualified to relate as peers to those we serve.
In 2008, LMEC received the U.S. Secretary of Labor's New Freedom Initiative Award for its exemplary and innovative efforts to further employment for people with disabilities.
